HKILA’S Mission
The Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) was established in 1988. Its mission is to promote the general advancement of landscape architecture in Hong Kong and beyond and raise the standard of professional landscape architectural services offered by the profession. HKILA works closely with the government, real estate developers, and the construction industry, combines artistic, scientific, and environmental considerations in its practice, in order to provide professional services and design solutions for humans, cities, and natural environments. We emphasise the protection and restoration of ecologies, and through the creation of high-quality built environments to achieve healthy and eco-friendly cities. Over the past decades, Hong Kong's landscape architects have applied creativity, professional knowledge, and sustainable development principles to contribute to the better of landscapes locally, regionally, and globally.
Background
Out of the advocacy for quality landscape and recreational space at transitional housing, HKILA initiated a workgroup on Transitional Housing in 2021 to explore modular integrated landscape elements to facilitate the wellness of people with a vision to the equity of access to green and recreational space for people of all classes. With the support from the Construction Industry Council, two demonstration pieces have been installed at the Zero Carbon Park in November 2022 and in November 2023 respectively. To take the initiative further, HKILA organizes this student design competition for landscape elements in form of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) that could be easily installed and dismantled with the flexibility for application in different site contexts and intended for application at housing estates including those of temporary nature.
The Objective
Addressing the growing demand for sustainable and efficient construction methods that enhance the quality of urban living spaces, this design competition aims to encourage innovation in the field of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) with a focus on its application in landscape architecture. Targeting students of a wide range of related disciplines, it is an initiative to inspire creative, sustainable and efficient solution that integrate with the wellness-focused design principles. An exhibition is planned for the winning designs to showcase the diverse creative ideas gathered in this competition. We envision the initiative will serve as a valuable reference for designers and communities.
Design should offer multi-functional, adaptive, easily assembled and dismantled landscape solutions. It can be an enhancement of the Mi-Landscape 1.0 or 2.0 piece or a new design, and can be a combination of different units, but must be able to fit into a 3m x 3m area.
